ABSTRACT

Classical Greeks attributed the origins of the arts to people living in areas where Bronze Age craftsmanship had reached a high level. A number of legends attributes the invention of fine art to mysterious people with supranatural capabilities and powers. One such area associated by tradition with the origins of arts, and a centre of Bronze Age craftsmanship, was the island of Rhodes (Pollitt, 1990: 12). It is interesting to note that the craftsmen are admired for the quality of their work, their God-given capabilities and their role in society.
