ABSTRACT

The Museum of Alexandria was established as a combined centre of religious and literary activities. It was founded most probably by Ptolemy Soter, under the influence of the Peripatetic philosopher Demetrius Poliorcetes, who became a tyrant of Athens (317307 BC) and after he was expelled from the city fled to Egypt. He became an adviser of the King, who was more than willing to follow the Aristotelian tradition of learning.
