ABSTRACT
In 1367 he succeeded his old friend and patron, John Edlington, as Bishop of Winchester, one of the wealthiest sees in Europe. Through the difficulties of Richard IPs reign he was recalled to serve again as Chancellor from 1386 to 1391. He spent his final years as an elder statesman, and as an important churchman who could give time to his educational foundations.
