Giovanni Dondi discusses the collecting of classical antiquities

One of the most significant testimonies to the standing of classical art towards the end of the fourteenth century comes from Giovanni Dondi dall'Orologio, a friend of Petrarch's. His strange nickname, of 'the Clock', came from a famous clock which he designed and built, and which became a showpiece at the Visconti Palace at Pavia.
