ABSTRACT

In the Theaetetus Plato was interested in the question of what it is to talk about something. This is what his interest in discourse was. This is the kind of question the early Greek philosophers had followed as well. It is connected with the question of what it is to be a thing, and with the nature of reality in that way. This is where the matter of the commensurability of things comes in. No doubt the philosopher’s interest in language has generally been on these lines. This at any rate is the way in which it came down to Plato through the work of the Pythagoreans.
