ABSTRACT

On 20 July 2000, a sold-out house gathers at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre to witness the final performance of Chinese-American actor Lee Jun-Fan’s long and wide-ranging career. Directed by Sophie Rodgers, the production has been eagerly anticipated since its announcement, as it would be not only Lee’s final stage performance but also his first performance as one of Shakespeare’s great eponymous roles. An athletic 60 years old, Lee is too young for Lear and too old for Hamlet; Macbeth, therefore, is a kind of coronation, marking Lee as one of the greatest actors of his time.
