ABSTRACT

People have more options to select from a wide range of lifestyles and the ability to dress according to the styles of chosen lifestyles. Lifestyle groups may be smaller in size than mainstream society or other more dominant classifications, such as social classes, but the smaller groups have rules, influencers to follow, and penalties for nonconforming just the same. This chapter discusses different sets of lifestyles—one among Japanese young women and others among North American men. Japan is known for interesting styles of dress among young women. In her book Fashioning Japanese Subcultures, sociologist Yuniya Kawamura wrote about these young women she studied. The book The Rebels: A Brotherhood of Outlaw Bikers was written by an anthropology graduate student who became part of a biker club to learn about the organization and way of life. Outlaw bikers wore "essentially the club uniform". Most of the style was guided by informal rules, with everyone following what everyone else was wearing.
