The UK and the EU: an interesting love-hate relationship The United Kingdom, made up of Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland, joined the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1973 through the efforts of Conservative Prime Minister Edward Heath. From that moment on, the relations between the UK and the European bloc have been turbulent because the various UK governments have expressed varying degrees of reservations whenever the European project has sought to take further steps towards integration.
