However, a little thought suggests that the presence of more liquor outlets in poorer neighborhoods might be the result of the higher alcohol consumption in poor areas and not the cause. For example, those interested in opening liquor stores may be drawn to poor areas with higher per capita alcohol consumption patterns. Thus, the presence of large numbers of liquor stores might only be a sign of the consumption and associated crime, not its cause.
