Statisticiansoftenusepasttrendstopredictfutureones.Often,thisisdone withalinegraphthatshowstheprevioustrendswithasolidlineandtheprojectionwithadashedline.Figure1showsthisforthedataonthepercentageof womenintheworkforcefrom1970to1980whenthepercentageincreasedfrom about47%toabout58%.Makinga"straight-lineprojection,"wereachthefalse conclusionthat100%ofthewomenwillbeintheworkforcearoundtheyear 2020.
