ABSTRACT

The fact that it is in-depth rules out the use of typical questionnaires, tests, and psychological scales. Instead, qualitative researchers use techniques such as in-depth semi structured interviews , focus-group discussions, and direct observations over an extended period of time. In fact, sometimes qualitative researchers live with (such as living with a tribe) and work with (such as helping teachers to conduct lessons) their participants. The resulting data do not lend themselves to easy quantification, so qualitative researchers usually report on themes and trends using words instead of statistics.
