ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines research and design processes when designing for kids and teens. With an emphasis on what makes designing for children different from aiming for a general user, readers will learn Design Research methods, including defining the problem, setting goals and objectives, and developing a project brief. It includes approaches used for observational research, concept testing, playtesting, usability testing, focus groups and interviews with kids, and advice on building a plan for secondary research sources including historical, design, trend and children’s culture. Materials and design considerations emphasize sustainability and safety, ergonomics, human factors and inclusive design. Business factors in the children’s markets are considered, including brand positioning, case studies, ethical/sustainable business practices, marketing, distribution, post-distribution and brand engagement. Legal considerations include researching, developing and obtaining, and maximizing intellectual property. Design methods are broken down, including idea generation, co-design, prototyping, production and manufacturing.
