ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about what deans are expected to do. At a small to medium-sized university it is possible for the dean to survive with one staff person if that person is as efficient a worker as Andrea. In addition to the numerous irregular/unscheduled activities that deans are often drawn into, there are also many structured activities. In a non-collective bargaining environment the dean has a great deal of latitude to investigate such complaints, sometimes within a set of agreed upon faculty-administration guidelines. The best way to deal with faculty competence complaints, as well as any other complaints, is through existing university/college guidelines, whether they are within a collective bargaining contract or otherwise. A new dean should be careful about what information (s)he chooses to internalize, especially if it is unsolicited information. Workload is usually defined in the faculty manual or in the collective bargaining agreement.
