ABSTRACT
Qualitative researchers often employ purposive samples. As indicated in Topic 68, researchers who use this type of sample deliberately select individuals who they think might be rich sources of information on a particular research topic. Researchers who employ purposive sampling should explain their reasoning and the steps they took to implement it (see Topic 69). Without information of this type, readers are likely to assume that a sample of convenience (not a purposive sample) was used.
