ABSTRACT
Because the gender of the interviewer might affect the honesty of respondents' answers, some respondents were randomly assigned to have a samegender interviewer, some were randomly assigned to have an opposite-gender interviewer, and the remaining ones were given a choice of whether they wanted to be interviewed by a male or female interviewer. The latter group was told, "Because some of the questions we will be asking are somewhat personal, we want you to choose the kind of interviewer you would like. We have found that some people prefer male interviewers and others prefer female interviewers. Would you like to have a female interviewer or a male interviewer?
