ABSTRACT
Problem: A researcher wanted to compare Asian Americans and White Americans on variables such as depression and social anxiety. Identifying two groups that are comparable except for race is essential to avoid confounding. For example, if highly educated Asian Americans are compared with poorly educated White Americans, differences in anxiety between the two groups may be due to either the difference in education or the difference in race.
