ABSTRACT

A bivariate analysis based on percentages shows the relationship between two variables. Notice that if we were interested in cause and effect, gender would have to be the independent variable (the possible cause) because respondents have their gender before they develop attitudes toward women in military combat. In other words, in a cause-and-effect sequence, the cause (that is, the independent variable) must precede the effect (that is, dependent variable). Thus, in this case, the dependent variable is approval/disapproval (each respondent indicates whether or not he or she approves). When examining the results of a bivariate analysis, compare across categories of the independent variable. As is true with other prestigious occupations, medicine is characterized by extensive gender inequality.
