ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors examine the relationship between gender and estimated chances of admission separately for each race category. This would control race as a variable. A trivariate percentage table shows the relationship between two variables while controlling for a third variable called a control variable. Since a control variable is expected to influence the relationship between the independent and dependent variables, in this chapter, the authors aim to control its effects in the analysis of the data so that they can examine only the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. For example the researchers examined the relationship between gender and estimated chances of medical school admission. The positions of women and men in different types of networks might vary; for example, women may be more isolated from networks involving sociability outside of the office than from those of jobrelated interaction.
