ABSTRACT

It is argued in this chapter that a pedagogy of caring confrontation can be embodied by all citizens as part of their democratic way-of-being. Through reading the world as critical pedagogy strongly recommends, it is recognized that such a disposition enables citizens to caringly confront each other and also government agencies throughout society. It is argued that in order to be genuinely democratic, citizens must protect their societies from the financial elites who promote anti-democratic practices. The strategies of the financial elites are recognized as involving policy-oriented managerialism, placing corporate individuals on the inside of government agencies, manipulating government policies, promoting propaganda, exercising censorship, and encouraging the natural vulnerabilities of people to remain unaddressed so that they are unable to actively challenge the corporate agenda. It is therefore argued that educated citizens must be willing and able to caringly confront all of these strategies.
