ABSTRACT

In many industrial disputes the levels of pay, the methods of calculating payment or the pay differentials existing between jobs are the underlying causes, but in the hotel and catering industry industrial disputes are rarely identified as such owing to the limited extent of organized labour. A methodical, fair approach to the award of wages and salaries is vital to a harmonious relationship between employers and employees. The type of factors evaluated in each job may include: knowledge, skill, responsibility, physical demands, mental demands, social skills and working conditions. These seven examples give a broad indication of the types of factors considered. The normal method of awarding points for each factor is to have a scale with 'bench-mark' jobs on it. When evaluating a particular factor of a job it will be placed at or between what appear to be the most appropriate 'bench-mark' job or jobs.
