ABSTRACT

In recent years the importance of an undertaking's human resources has become much more apparent owing to the considerable costs of labour and the growing staff shortages in some sectors of the hotel and catering industry. It has led, in particular, to accurate manpower planning so that an employer has the right resources available when required and also so that labour costs are not unnecessarily high. Manpower planning is divided into two separate and distinct parts: strategic and operational. Some of the largest employers conduct detailed studies periodically which provide a complete breakdown of the labour force divided into various sections including job grades, age and service. One of the most common uses of computers within organizations has been for the preparation of the payroll. As the hotel and catering industry continues to grow there should be corresponding increases in levels of employment.
