ABSTRACT

It is worth reiterating that there is a commonly held belief among educators

that the development of written test items

is a relatively simple procedure. Although

unique in their own right, subjective items

share one important characteristic with

objective items: Developing high-quality

items requires a good deal of knowledge,

skill, and practice. In this chapter, we will examine the characteristics, guidelines for

development, and advantages and limita-

tions of two main types of subjective test

items.
