ABSTRACT

Chapter Eight is not the traditional conclusions and implications chapter of an academic monograph, because these have already been discussed in Chapter Seven. Instead, I use Chapter Eight as an Afterword, to discuss some of the lingering questions that this research about equity, exclusion and everyday science learning has raised for me. These are first, the question of what we might do about science content. Second, I reflect on some of the tensions that arose in thinking, talking and writing about racism during and after the research carried out for this book. Thirdly, I discuss the implications for aspects of this book beyond everyday science learning. This chapter finishes with a discussion of some of the contemporary issues that preoccupy me when I think about everyday science learning and equity today, in an attempt to take the temperature of the water surrounding this research.
