ABSTRACT

Sleep Promotion Behavioral Education Sleep promotion, also known as sleep hygiene, is a

set of behavioral principles delivered as an educational intervention to promote healthy sleep habits. In addi-

55 tion to a healthy diet and reduced caffeine intake, sleep promotion includes attention to environmental factors such as light and noise reduction, temperature control, and mattress comfort (McCall, 2005). Exercise is encouraged but should be avoided within 3 to 4 hr before

60 bedtime. Establishing a regular schedule for going to bed and getting up is important, and avoiding daytime naps is emphasized, particularly if the client is complaining of difficulty falling asleep at night (Eddy & Walbroehl, 1999; Hauri, 1997).
