ABSTRACT

The Stanford Sleepiness Scale is a single item measure of the subjective perception of sleepiness. The individual is asked to rate her level of sleepinessalertness on a scale ranging from I (feeling active and alert) to 7 (lost the struggle to stay awake). It has been used to determine sleepiness in shift workers (Paley & Tepas, 1994) and in those suffering from sleep deprivation (Dinges, Whitehouse, Ome, & Orne, 1988) and sleep fragmentation (Bonnet, 1986).
