ABSTRACT

This chapter is reserved for upbeat emotions in sport, emotions which motivate us, propel us to strive and excel, such as ambition, without which there would be no contest. Such strife and its outcome produce other high emotions such as joy, pride, and euphoria. However, excessive doses of such emotions can also be detrimental to the spirit of competitive sport and ruinous for us and others, in the short and long runs. In this chapter, I examine the dangers of excess of these emotions and suggest possible antidotes.
