ABSTRACT

Nietzsche’s philosophy of power opened up new vistas from which the question of power can be explored in different fields of culture. This chapter explores power relations in sports and the way the feeling of power manifests itself in the sporting field. For example, how does a victorious team or athlete relate to the defeated one? Or, how do managers and trainers relate to their own players? Or, how do umpires and referees relate to athletes who are competing? This chapter considers vertical and lateral power relations in sport.
