ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the practical habits that will help student research materials and notes under control. Close reading is the process of carefully engaging what student read in order to find its full meaning and implications. A major source of confusion, inaccuracy— and sometimes plagiarism— lies in careless or improper note-taking practices. The actual manufacturing cost of a consumer item includes the cost of materials and labor, of course, but also research and development costs, tooling costs, taxes, and plant utilities. Tooling costs for an automobile manufacturing line can exceed a billion dollars. Conduplicatio is an excellent rhetorical device for maintaining focus and creating emphasis. With conduplicatio, a word or phrase from a previous sentence is repeated at the beginning of the next sentence, thereby pulling out the idea and emphasizing it so that it signals to the reader the continuity of thought from one sentence to the next.
