A good lead-in helps to explain the source in advance by identifying its function in the paper— the lead-in positions the source in the logical context of the argument. Sources often need clarification, interpretation, commentary, or some other explanation. Some writers keep a loose scheme in their minds: The introductory lead-in should be from a fourth to half as long as the quotation, paraphrase, or summary; and the explanation following should be twice as long as the material is cited. The purpose of an in-text citation is to allow the reader to find the full bibliographic entry among the References or Works Cited at the end of the paper. A common pushback is that the technology can overcome the high cost of storage batteries and electric cars will remain too expensive to be a popular choice. However, the lessons of economies of scale, where every technology grows much less expensive as demand increases.
