ABSTRACT

A supervisor must acquire an understanding and working knowledge of group dynamics. Two key factors to group dynamics are: Interaction, and Influence. Supervisors must realize that groups, whether formal or informal, will always exist within an organization. While many officers may work alone day-to-day, there are benefits to forming groups, such as building a sense of belonging, attachment to the agency and a sense of stability. The supervisor's primary responsibility is to achieve results through people. Understanding group dynamics will enhance success. Supervisors must view working with the group as a challenge and should develop a positive attitude toward groups. Team building is a complex process that requires a great deal of leadership and team effort. Supervisors must create an environment conducive to its members truly functioning as a team. The first-line supervisor is responsible for setting goals and directions for the team that are clear and meaningful. This will lead to the development of a cohesive group.
