ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the supposed rise of the hoplite phalanx in the early Archaic period, before exploring the various questions surrounding the phalanx’s role in the rise of the polis. It then takes a close look at several battles involving hoplites, including conflicts between Greek poleis and between the Greeks and the Persians. Finally, it considers the cultural preeminence of the hoplite in Greek society, particularly as demonstrated in dramatic literature and the visual arts.
