ABSTRACT

Toby Fulwiler’s first two books (which were co-edited with Art Young), Language Connections: Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum (1982) and Writing Across the Disciplines: Research into Practice (1987), established Fulwiler as a leading voice for Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC), which was then expanding nationally. In 1987 he edited what was perhaps his most influential work, The Journal Book. In it, Fulwiler argued that teachers should write with their students and devote a set amount of each class period to directed writing as a way of furthering students’ understanding of a subject—whether English literature or physics.
