ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on safety related to measuring equipment. Most safety systems include a measurement function and, therefore, safety issues may be an important part of the measuring instrument, or the 'sensor' as it is called in some safety-related standards. The book provides a bit more about some common safety issues, related to measuring instruments. Worldwide governmental organisations have published recommendations for electrical safety. An important part of the electrical safety related to reliability and good functionality of a measuring instrument is the protection from dust and water. Remember that even if people can verify the connection by checking the function of the system, the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) protection is more difficult to check as it will be useful only when a disturbance occurs.
