ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides evidence that all is not well in the Australian superannuation industry. Fees and costs are high, and performance seems to be poor by international standards. With hindsight, the various decisions made during the evolution of the Australian superannuation industry were unfortunate. Incomes in retirement for a generation of Australians will be lower than could have been achieved if a different set of decisions had been made. The failures of the Australian system provide useful lessons for other systems worldwide. The Financial System Inquiry in Australia has triggered submissions and reports. The Super System Review and the Future of Financial Advice reforms both represented steps in the right direction.
