ABSTRACT

The Association for Coaching have an excellent Supervision Principles Framework which is relational and 'psychological minded' in its approach to coach supervision. Throughout the supervisor-coach relationship, the supervisor utilizes: integrity, rapport and flexibility; their ability to handle complexity; a co-creative approach; an equal, OK-OK alliance; meta-perspective thinking; respect for individuality and diversity; simultaneous engagement and detachment – unattached intimacy'; a psychological framework for an understanding of process and content. From the supervision checklist, this demonstrates 'equal relationship' and 'supervisor models process': the supervisor also pays attention to balancing the various aspects of the supervision. By, for instance, co-creatively helping the coach identify what they want to accomplish – and within each session; checking regularly on the supervisory relationship with the coach and making new agreements on how best they can work together; respectfully naming inconsistency or lack of congruence. From the checklist, this demonstrates 'contract fulfilled' and the 'reduction of probability of harm'.
