ABSTRACT

The Cedar Cottage approach is an integrated treatment model in which therapeutic work with the harming father is integrated with that of the victimized child, her siblings, her mother and other members of the extended family. Integrated treatment involves understanding and connecting the individual's goals of treatment with the therapeutic processes of others. It is important to distinguish integrated from conjoint therapy. Mother-daughter work is less structured than parent dyad work and needs careful ongoing assessment due to the tactics to which both have been subjected by the father. Mothers frequently need support to access close adult friend or family support rather than to rely on any of their children. The mother needs to be present for direct work with siblings and the harming father. Contact for the daughter and harming father should only take place when she wants this, has undertaken preparation and is ready, is fully supported by her mother and it is in her best interests.
