ABSTRACT

This chapter explores management strategies and examines the ideas in the light of real life practices. To gather the data a special survey instrument would need to be designed to specifically define the concept of cultural adaptation in the workplace. The survey would generate data and a qualitative study could be undertaken with selected employers in the Washington Metropolitan Area. The chapter presents key elements of the survey data, then analyzes the data, and discusses the implications and includes recommendations. The employment of non-natives is widespread and growing in the United States. Non-natives in the labor force appear to be more concentrated in urban areas, tend to live in sections by ethnic group and receive the most support from their friends and families. Language skills training is usually required for the non-professionals to be effective members of staff in any industry.
