ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 presents the key ingredients of a small stories approach to the study of digital mourning. After briefly overviewing the different narrative turns and their associated views of narrative, it proposes a framework for the empirical study of digital mourning as small stories, paying attention to different levels of sharing, namely selecting, storying, and positioning. The concept of affective positioning is introduced and defined as the use of linguistic and discourse cues for modulating degrees of distance from or proximity to events and characters, audiences, and the self. The chapter also presents the data and methods, which have guided the selection and analysis of the different case studies, including the main ethical principles and challenges raised by the selected data.
