ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the aspects of leadership development. It summarizes the components of the leadership action cycle to review evaluation. The chapter briefly reviews the leadership styles and leadership theories. It analyzes one of the great administrative leaders in US history: George Washington. The chapter describes the types of leadership development: self-study, structured experience, and formal training and education. Executive development is the most conceptual, as well as the broadest and most externally oriented, type of training. Leaders at all levels of the organization should encourage those reporting to them to submit individual development plans that map out future learning goals as well as employee accomplishment reports that emphasize past training and development. Job rotation enriches both the organization and the employees involved. Coaching, the most commonly used developmental technique at all levels, is the backbone of on-the-job training.
