ABSTRACT

Technoscience represents a new relationship between science and technology in which there is an erasure of the boundaries between the two areas and technology takes on many of the characteristics of science while science comes to resemble technology. Historian Wolfgang Könighas noted that a significant number of faculty members at German universities and Technische Hochschulen had gained their experience in industrial research laboratories and therefore people should classify much of this work more as industry-based science rather than science-based industry. As a result, the electrical industrial research laboratory began to erase the distinctions between industry-based science and science-based industry which helped to establish a foundation for the emergence of what some have called technoscience. This new type of industrial research laboratory first emerged in 1900 with the establishment of the General Electric Research Laboratory, soon to be followed by various Bell Laboratories at American Telephone and Telegraph.
