ABSTRACT
The financial crisis of 2008 and its aftermath made us experience the destructive potential of greed. It seems preposterous that eighteenth-century philosophers re-evaluated passions like greed and vanity as the basis of prosperity and progress. And yet, the science of political economy emerged from this discourse. This chapter introduces the questions and presents an outline of the book.
