ABSTRACT
The book’s last chapter focusses on the third possible encounter between migrants and the Visa Information System (VIS) which occurs if migrants, who have overstayed the duration of their visa and have thus become ‘illegal’, are apprehended by the police. Hence, illegalised migrants try to avoid this encounter through tactics of evading and negotiating police controls. The chapter shows how migrants appropriate mobility and other resources in Europe under conditions of illegality in the context of biometric border regimes in order to demonstrate the self-perpetuating dynamic of migrants’ struggles, which is animated by the irreducible ambivalence of practices of appropriation.
