ABSTRACT

Capitalist ideology is deeply engrained that most people find it difficult to even imagine a viable alternative. An ideograph is a sign that cues an established ideology-reinforcing response. Collectively, ideographs amount to a form of rhetoric, whether verbal or visual, and rhetoric is the primary manner by which ideology is circulated amongst the population of a society. Ideology critique is a form of critical analysis that explores the relationship between rhetoric and power and considers the use of ideographs in an artifact to draw conclusions about the author, their world-view, and the ideological messages communicated by the text. Remix, sometimes deployed as a form of culture jamming, enables people to expose and critique corporate media using its own language. Access to the Internet, social media, and digital production tools have expanded the scope and reach of consumer activities and the potential for individuals to respond to previously "one-way" media transmissions.
