ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses five significant areas of concern for the theorization of remix, which may be respectively categorized under the broad headings of medium specificity, semiotics, rhetoric, ideology critique, and ethics/law, all of which inform the emerging field of remix studies. It highlights the importance of semiotic transformation in considerations of whether a remix is derivative or transformative, reflecting upon the implications of adopting the rhetoric associated with intellectual property; and scrutinizing the nature of the ideological belief that cultural works are a form of property. The book argues that remix is more socio-culturally beneficial than harmful, and copyright law in its current form is more harmful than beneficial to the greatest number of people. It explains sampling is the defining property of remix.
