ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a brief introduction to the complex and sometimes conicting scholarly perspectives on the role of evidence and expertise in policymaking. This discussion will help readers unfamiliar with this literature to understand later chapters that describe the contributions of experts and evidence to climate adaptation, and how political attitudes toward their roles in policymaking can inuence policy outcomes.
