ABSTRACT
The diculties of deriving denitive and wholly impartial scientic knowledge for policymaking, as discussed in the previous chapter, suggests that without due care politics can play an active role in evidence development. In this chapter I describe the political, historical and policymaking contexts for the cases examined in this book. Understanding these contexts will allow readers to understand why policy evidence and expertise may have been inuenced by prevailing politics to date.
