ABSTRACT

In this chapter I explain the epistemological character of adaptation evidence and adaptation policy problems, to provide the reader with a framework for understanding climate-related knowledge and expertise. This understanding will be helpful for considering the tensions between expert and political authority for climate adaptation, as described in Chapter 5. It will also provide a point of comparison for policy players’ perceptions of climate science and policy evidence to be described in Chapter 6, and the linear-technocratic expectations of policymaking that contribute to processes of politicisation and scientisation in England and Queensland, described in Chapter 7.
