ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the importance of the news stories that authors select to put on the air. The media took a beating following the election of 2016. Members of the news media were accused of being dishonest and of presenting 'fake' news. Ethical and moral newswriting and reporting has always been a major consideration in the media. The public traditionally gives immediate credibility to those who write, report and anchor the news. The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) is an organization which provides visibility, advocacy, training, resources, networking and awards to electronic journalists. The RTDNA suggests that work should empower listeners and viewers to make informed decisions for themselves and not tell people what to believe or how to feel. Ethical decision-making should occur at every step of the journalistic process, including story selection, news-gathering, production, presentation and delivery.
