ABSTRACT

The wire services are churning out stories 24/7, news is going on all around us, it's happening all over the world and more is being generated all the time. The key is to selecting the right stories and the right angles for them are to have a good sense of who our audience is. To do this we need to understand the demographics of our listeners or viewers. Demographics are the basic facts about someone, things like their gender, age, marital status, income, education level, etc. In addition, there is something called psychographics. These are not as definite as demographics. Those are indisputable. But psychographics make assumptions about what people think, feel, fear, believe and want based on their demographics. While these will not necessarily be correct for everyone in audience, they still will help hone in on what type of stories audience will be interested in.
