ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4 we look at the first phase of the generic project lifecycle, that of shaping and scoping. We describe how:

• the project is initially shaped within the organization, given the many hopes and ambitions of those who want to benefit from it and given the organizational strategy;

• the organization ensures the investment decision is sound so that it will deliver the proposed benefits;

• success criteria for the project are developed and agreed for performance monitoring during delivery and for handover to the client at closure;

• a definition and scope is put around the project.
